POLICE are investigating an alleged incident of wilful fire-raising in Kilwinning.
Officers are now appealing for information following the blaze at the town's Tesco Express store.
The branch was forced to close on Sunday following the fire which took hold at the rear of the shop in the early hours of that morning.
It is understood that the store has been able to re-open on Monday.
Fire crews were called to the Lauchlan Way area of the building, which sits predominately on Main Street, shortly before 3.30am.
One appliance was sent to the scene with the blaze extinguished around one hour later. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.26am on Sunday, July 12, to reports of a fire in the open to the rear of commercial premises on Lauchlan Way in Kilwinning.
“Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance to the area, and the fire was extinguished.
“There were no casualties, and the crew left the scene at 4.11am after ensuring the area was safe.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 3.45am on Sunday, July 12, 2026, we received a report of a fire at a premises on Main Street, Kilwinning.
“There were no reports of any injuries. The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 0626 of July 12, 2026.”
Tesco has been approached for comment.
