Tesco has followed followed supermarket giant Sainsbury's in slashing the price of its own-brand bread and butter.
The UK's biggest supermarket has reduced the cost of their most popular bread, the Toastie white bread, by 10p from 85p to 75p. Tesco has also slashed 10p from their own-brand white, wholemeal medium and wholemeal thick 800g with the loads now costing 75p.
Shoppers will also notice the price of the supermarket's own-brand 250g blocks of salted and unsalted butter has fallen from £1.99 to £1.89. Tesco explained that it will continue to work closely with suppliers to manage any further volatility.
Following the reduction, Tesco group chief product officer Ashwin Prasad said: “As families continue to watch their weekly spend and budget carefully, we’re pleased to be able to pass on price reductions where we can, and to help with everyday essentials like bread and butter.”
However, the grocer stated that prices may vary in its Express stores.
Discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl announced matching price cuts on Wednesday. Aldi slashed the price of its 800g Village Bakery Toastie thick sliced white bread, medium sliced white bread and wholemeal medium sliced bread from 79p to 75p.
The budget supermarket also reduced its Cowbelle British and Welsh salted and unsalted 250g butter from £1.99 to £1.89.
Lidl have also slashed prices with their Dairy Manor salted and unsalted butter now priced at £1.89. Selected Rowan Hill Bakery Bread has been cut to 75p in stores too.
The cuts come just one day after Sainbury's announced a decrease in prices in some bread and butter products in store in response to falling commodity prices.
Sainsbury's, which is the UK's second-biggest supermarket chain, has also lowered the price of its own-brand 250g salted and unsalted butter by 5 per cent - now costing £1.89.
The price of the supermarket's 800g Soft White Medium, Wholemeal Medium, Wholemeal Thick and Toastie White loaves of bread by 11 per cent to 75p.
The company explained that the lower prices are due to commodity prices for wheat and butter beginning to fall.
The cost cuts comes as grocery inflation leapt by more than 19 per cent in March compared to prices one year ago, as both energy and supply chain costs were passed on to shoppers.
Supermarkets including Sainsbury's Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Asda also recently cut the price of milk by at least 5p.
