Tesco shoppers dismayed as Clubcard chocolate bars and sweets deals are axed

Tesco shoppers have voiced their dismay at a recent update to the supermarket's Clubcard scheme which has seen deals on sweets and chocolates axed.

Customers could previously get three chocolate bars for £1.20 with their Clubcard, with the deal including favourites like Yorkie, Bounty and Kinder Bueno bars which usually cost 60-70p each. Tesco also offered a three for £1 Clubcard deal on bags of sweets like dolly mixtures, bananas and sugar shrimps.

But both of these promotions have now been ditched, The Mirror reports . It comes after new government legislation was introduced at the start of the month which placed restrictions on unhealthy food both in supermarkets and online.

As of October 1 , products that are high in fat, salt or sugar can no longer be displayed in prominent locations in shops such as at store entrances, aisle ends and checkouts, with the equivalent rules applying to food shopping websites. The measures have been brought in as part of the government’s commitment to reduce obesity levels.

But shoppers were not happy about the changes, with many taking to social media to air their frustrations over the axe. “It’s just an outrage that Tesco is no longer 3 for £1.20 on chocolate bars. This is what we call a cost of living crisis,” one person tweeted.

“Pleaaaase bring back 3 for £1.20 chocolate and 3 for £1 strawberry laces, I miss my sweet treats,” another shopper begged.

A third said: “Actually in complete shock that Tesco have stopped doing the £1 for three bags of sweets deal.”

”Tesco appear to have stopped their 3 chocolate bars for £1.20. This has been a staple of my working life. Cost of living crisis has finally broken me,” added a fourth.

The Department of Health and Social Care delayed a planned ban on multibuy deals on unhealthy food and drink , including the popular Buy One Get One Free promotion, in response to households struggling with the cost of living. They also confirmed that plans to ban junk food adverts on TV before the 9pm watershed, as well paid-for adverts online, have been pushed back.

The multibuy ban was due to come into force in October 2023 followed by the advertising restrictions in January 2024, according to the latest update from the Department of Health and Social Care. However, it’s unclear whether these plans will still go ahead, amid reports that Prime Minister Liz Truss could scrap the curbs.

The Mirror has contacted Tesco for comment.
