Tesco shoppers angry at sharp rise in cost of checkout essential

Supermarket giant Tesco has made a major change at its tills leaving shoppers disgruntled.

The retailer has been slammed for increasing the prices of its plastic bags in the middle of a cost of living crisis. The bags have seen a 10p increase, going up from 20p per bag to 30p.

The price hike comes after the retailer said they wanted to deter customers from buying the carrier bags, encouraging them to bring their own instead. Supermarkets were ordered to charge 5p for the weaker single-use carriers in October 2015 - and last year the Government raised this levy to 10p, reports the Liverpool Echo.

But shoppers were furious over the changes. They took to Twitter to share their complaints about the change in price. Gman said: "So the 5p bag, now costs 30p in @Tesco. Just another money making con. Why do we stand for this?" Zee said: "@Tesco are you out of your mind? 30p for a bag? Iceland cost 50p for as many bags as needed, plus packaging and picking."

Another user said: "Cost of living is crazy they charging 30p for bags in Tesco now." Meanwhile, Sam said: "@Tesco 30p for a bag!! Are you pulling our legs! Every little helps? Yeah righto!! I’m off to @AldiUK."

Tesco told the Mirror : "We have recently increased the price of our Bags for Life to 30p. We encourage customers to remember their bags to cut down on plastic and avoid paying for bags all-together – making it better for the planet and their pocket. Our Bags for Life are made of 100% recycled plastic, can reused many times, and once worn can be replaced for free and recycled."
