A Tesco shopper has put a new washing up liquid to the test that claims to save on energy bills - and was left seriously impressed by the results.
Fairy have released a washing up liquid with a new formula that means it can be used with cold water, helping to save on water heating costs while still providing a "brilliant clean" just as quickly according to the brand. The product has been spotted on the shelves of Tesco, Wilko, and B&M - but some shoppers were sceptical as to how well they would be able to wash their dishes with cold water.
MyLondon reporter Kieran Kelly tried the washing up liquid for himself - and said that the result was "astonishing". Hailing the new formula as a game changer after picking it up for £3 at Tesco, Kieran found that washing his dishes with cold water using Fairy's new product made "absolutely no difference" compared to washing up with hot water.

Also available in a Christmassy wild berry scent, the washing up liquid sports a label that reads "brilliant in cold, save energy" - but the product initially divided shoppers when they heard about it. When one person shopper about the washing up liquid in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, some said that they didn't fancy the idea of having their hands in cold water, while others doubted that it would be as effective at banishing bacteria.
Biomedical scientist Dr Nicky Milner debunked this idea in an investigation by the BBC, revealing: "It’s really about the scrubbing action. Research has shown that the temperature of the water doesn’t really make a difference. So a good scrub is more important than the water temperature. And research has shown that using washing up liquid to kill bacteria is important."
Other shoppers were keen to try the washing up liquid in a bid to save money on their energy bills by not having to use hot water - which could prove a huge help to households with the rising cost of living. "It's a great idea!" one Facebook user said. "Just sad times that energy costs so much people have to wash in cold water these days to save a little off their bills."
"This is a brilliant idea not just for money saving but what about if your boiler goes?" another person commented. "You still need to wash up and cheaper than boiling the kettle twice just to rinse some dishes."
A third shopper wrote: "Wow, thank you for sharing this. I have two young babies so often forget to wash up leaving the water to go cold. Will definitely be trying a bottle of this! Every little helps."
