Tesco has drawn criticism from shoppers after increasing the price of its plastic carrier bags from 20p to 30p.
The supermarket giant said that they hope to deter customers from buying the carrier bags in order to cut down on plastic waste. But many have slammed the timing of the price hike, with households across the UK struggling to make ends meet amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The Government ordered supermarkets to start charging 10p for single-use carrier bags last year, doubling the 5p levy introduced in October 2015. Tesco doubled this charge to 20p per bag in October 2020, BirminghamLive reports .
