Tesco introduces nationwide change that affects all self-service shoppers from today

Supermarket chain Tesco has introduced a new change that will affect everyone who chooses to scan their shopping at one of their self-service kiosks.

From today, self-service shoppers will find themselves asked an extra question before they finalise their payment at the till. The change will be in place for three weeks until Sunday, October 2. Before they make any payments, shoppers will now be asked if they want to make a donation to one of three leading UK charities. It will involve shoppers rounding up their payment to the nearest pound, reports Leicestershire Live.

The change is nationwide and donations can be made to either Cancer Research UK, The British heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.

Tesco has said that the move has been made to help raise funds and awareness for the health conditions supported by each charity. Additionally, they are looking to raise awareness for the importance of sustainable lifestyle changes that can help those who are affected by the conditions.

Oonagh Turnbull, head of health campaigns at Tesco, said: “The funds raised will continue to support the health of UK communities at such a critical time. Our health charity partners rely on donations to continue their awareness, prevention and research work.”

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive at Cancer Research UK, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who supports the important work we all do through this campaign, and we’re grateful for the generosity of shoppers up and down the country. Campaigns like ‘Helping you to live healthier’ are a great way to raise money, and to encourage people to make healthier choices that lead to healthier lifestyles.

"Every penny raised matters. We don’t take a single donation for granted.”

The nationwide change comes after the supermarket giant announced that they would be phasing out manned checkouts for self-service tills in their larger stores over a "lack of consumer demand."

Tesco said that it has seen a rise in popularity in shoppers choosing to use the self-service tills, despite a petition asking for more staff members reaching over 218,000 signatures.
