Tesco hikes meal deal price for all customers

Supermarket giant Tesco is increasing the price of its popular meal deal. Coming in force next week, shoppers will now have to pay up to £3.90 for a main, snack and drink.

The lunchtime combo will now cost £3.40 for Clubcard members - the first increase in a decade - up from the current £3 price. Shoppers without a Clubcard will find themselves paying £3.90.

This marks a 40p increase for all Tesco customers. The change is set to kick in from Monday, October 24, reports the Mirror.

Despite the increase, the meal deal does save money for shoppers with the most expensive main, snack and drink combination costing £6.44 when bought individually. It means Clubcard holders can still save up to £3.04 with non-members saving £2.54.

If your selection adds up to less than £3.40, or £3.90, then you will only pay the price of the items. The retailer says 70% of its customers use a Clubcard when buying their meal deal.

A spokesman said: " Clubcard members will pay just £3.40 for a main, snack and drink, making our meal deal an ideal way to grab a great value lunch on-the-go. And with savings of up to £3 on millions of possible combinations across our stores, including the recent addition of Costa hot drinks, and our ever-popular Christmas sandwiches which join the meal deal for the festive period, we’ve got something for every taste.”

The increase from Tesco comes after Boots increased its own meal deal this month. The high street pharmacy chain has increased the standard price of its meal deal from £3.59 to £3.99, and from £4.19 to £4.99.

However, customers using its Boots Advantage Card loyalty scheme pay £3.60, or £4.50 in London. The Co-op has changed the price of its meal deals twice this year.

It now costs £3.50 for loyalty card holders, or £4 for all other customers. It previously cost £3.75 for all customers, up from £3.50.

How much does each meal deal cost?

Here is how much each major retailer currently charges…

Boots: £3.99 or £4.99 in London (or £3.60 and £4.50 in London for Advantage Card holders)

Sainsbury’s: £3.50

Morrisons: £3.50 (or £4 premium version)

Co-op: £4 (or £3.50 for loyalty card holders)

Aldi, Lidl, Marks & Spencer or Waitrose don’t currently offer a lunchtime meal deal.
