As we start a new year supermarkets are expected to be busy as people stock up on food and drink after overindulging over the festive period.
And as New Year's Day falls on a Sunday you can expect opening hours for stores to be different as we head into the first week of 2023.
While most of the big-name shops were open on New Year's Day, some kept their doors closed like they did on Boxing Day.

Opening times on Monday are also different from normal as New Year's Day fell on a Sunday - meaning the first day of the week is a Bank Holiday in its place.
With all that in mind here are all the opening hours for all the main supermarkets over the next few days including Aldi, ASDA, Tesco, M&S, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Booths.
Aldi
Below are the store times given by Aldi, however opening times may vary by location. Use the store finder to find your local store.
- Friday 30 December: 8am - 8pm
- Saturday 31 December: 8am - 6pm
- Sunday 1 January: CLOSED
- Monday 2 January: 8am - 8pm
- Tuesday 3 January: 8am - 10pm
ASDA
Opening times depend on the branch you visit, so it's a good idea to consult the store locator before planning your shopping. Below are the hours for ASDA Eastlands and ASDA Trafford Park in Greater Manchester as a guide of superstore opening and closing times over the festive period.
- Friday 30 December: Open 24 hours
- Saturday 31 December: 12am - 7pm
- Sunday 1 January: 11am - 5pm (10.30am - 4.30pm at Trafford Park)
- Monday 2 January: 8am - 8pm
- Tuesday 3 January: Open 24 hours
Below are the opening hours for Asda Harpurhey which is not open 24 hours.

Tesco
Hours over the new year period will vary depending on the store. Most larger stores will be open from 6am to 6pm on New Year's Eve and 11am to 5pm New Year's Day. To check the exact opening hours of your local Tesco use the store finder.

M&S
M&S store opening times over the new year will vary from store to store, and you can find yours using the store finder here. Similar to Boxing Day, stores will remain closed on New Year's Day.

Sainsbury's
Opening hours will vary by store. On the December 30 most supermarkets and convenience stores will trade their normal hours for these days.
On New Year’s Eve, the majority of supermarkets will be open from 7am to 7pm and convenience stores will close at 9pm. On New Year's Day, the majority of supermarkets will be open between 10am and 4pm (normal Sunday trading hours). Convenience stores will be open between 9am & 9pm.
On Monday January 2 opening hours will be reduced due to the Bank Holiday. The store in Heaton Park Manchester for reference is open 8am-8pm instead of the usual 7am-11pm.

Opening hours will vary by store.

Waitrose
On New Year's Day, Waitroise shops will be closed, with the exception of a small number which will have varying opening hours between 7am and 10pm.
