More than 28,000 people had unlawful convictions for train fare evasion overturned on Thursday, as the courts began the process of fixing an embarrassing misuse of the fast-track Single Justice Procedure.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring ruled in August that train firms had been wrongly bringing criminal cases for several years, and an estimated 75,000 convictions would have to be quashed.
