Tennessee Volunteers pitcher Ben Joyce missed last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery back in 2020, but it’s safe to say that his arm is looking healthy in 2022.
He may have just earned a spot in NCAA record books as well.
Joyce, a big 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher from Knoxville, recorded the final two outs of the Volunteers’ 10-0 win over South Carolina on Sunday by breaking out some of the fastest pitchers ever thrown in the college game. According to the Lindsey Nelson Stadium videoboard, Joyce hit 102 (twice), 103 and 104 mph (!!!) in a five-pitch sequence to end the game. He mixed in a 91 mph changeup just for good measure.
That 104 mph pitch was the fastest recorded pitch that Joyce has thrown this season, and it’s believed to be the fastest pitch ever in the college game (though pitch speed isn’t documented across college baseball like it is in MLB).
