Top Republicans in Tennessee are considering changes to the state's execution laws after last week's failed attempt to execute death row inmate Christa Pike raised serious questions about its lethal injection procedure.
US Sen. Marsha Blackburn, the Republican candidate for Tennessee governor, said Monday that the incident should not be used as a reason to suspend the death penalty. Instead, she said, the state must find a more reliable way to carry out executions.
