Tennessee cops confront suspect in hotel bathroom. Then it wanders off on 4 legs

Wildlife officials generally advise that if you encounter a black bear, you should remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and slowly back away while giving the animal space. In places like Gatlinburg, Tennessee, those warnings are not just theoretical. Bears regularly move through neighborhoods, parking lots, and even hotel properties near the Great Smoky Mountains.

These lessons were likely on the minds of officers responding to a call at a motel in Gatlinburg after reports of something trapped inside a restroom. What they found, according to accounts of the incident, was not a person at all but a black bear inside an exterior bathroom at the Quality Inn & Suites.

The Gatlinburg bear in bathroom: What happened?

Captured in now-viral footage, the encounter reportedly occurred in the early morning hours after a hotel employee contacted authorities around 2:30 a.m. The bear somehow entered the restroom and became stuck inside before officers arrived, according to local reports.

The footage shows police approaching the bathroom door cautiously before opening it. Once the door swings open, officers quickly step back as the bear emerges and begins walking out of the building.

There is a brief moment of confusion as the animal steps into the open air. Officers can be seen and heard trying to guide it away from the property while maintaining distance.

At one point, noise and movement are used to encourage the bear to leave the immediate vicinity, consistent with standard wildlife deterrence practices in similar situations.

The bear does not appear to charge or show aggression. Instead, it slowly ambles away from the motel and continues down the sidewalk.

The incident has spread quickly online, where viewers have reacted with a mix of humor and surprise at the unusual setting.

The bear had no prior record

According to reports citing police incident information, the bear caused minor damage inside the restroom before officers arrived, including a shattered mirror. Estimated damage was reported to be relatively small.

As of now, there does not appear to be a public statement from Gatlinburg police specifically addressing the viral video beyond what has been reported through media outlets and on social media. No injuries were reported, and the bear eventually left the area on its own after exiting the restroom.

Encounters like this are not unheard of in Gatlinburg and surrounding Sevier County, which sits adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, home to a large population of black bears. Wildlife officials routinely remind residents and visitors to secure food, avoid leaving trash accessible, and keep a safe distance from animals that enter developed areas.

While bear sightings in the region often draw attention, a case involving a motel bathroom appears to be an unusual twist even by local standards. Still, the outcome followed a familiar pattern: minimal human intervention, no reported injuries, and the animal eventually wandering off.
