An injured camper and one of her saviours are in hospital after a rescue effort lasting almost 10 hours on the NSW mid north coast.

Emergency services were called to assist about 5.30pm on Sunday after the woman fell and hit her head on a rock at Rossglen, south of Port Macquarie, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

Multiple other agencies were involved in the rescue including NSW Ambulance, NSW Police and the Rural Fire Service.

The woman was in thick bushland about 300 metres from the road, but rescuers managed to find her using GPS coordinates.

The camper was stabilised before being winched from the scene by a rescue helicopter.

As the helicopter took the woman to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, one of the rescuers started having chest pains and trouble breathing as the crew returned to their vehicles.

They were assessed by paramedics and another helicopter was called in to collect them about 1.30am on Monday, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson told AAP.

Crews finally left the scene at about 3am.
