The conflict in the Middle East has continued to escalate, with Israel announcing it had launched a “broad wave of strikes” against government targets in Tehran, including the presidential office on Wednesday morning.
The violence has continued to spread across the region. In Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes have killed 52 people and displaced at least 30,000 after Israel approved a ground incursion into the south. Iran and its allies have launched further attacks targeting Israel and Gulf states, with the UAE reporting hundreds of missiles and drones sent towards its territory.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society says at least 787 people have been killed since the onslaught began. Other monitoring groups have suggested higher tolls. The number of US service members killed has risen to six, according to the US military.
The US state department has urged Americans to leave 14 Middle Eastern countries amid the worsening conflict and widespread airspace closures have stranded or diverted hundreds of thousands of travellers.
Tens of thousands of people are stranded in the region as the war with Iran spreads. Major airlines have cancelled flights and much of the Gulf’s airspace has closed. Some travellers have sought shelter during airstrikes, while others remain on cruise ships unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
