HYDERABAD: A 36-year-old woman who was set ablaze by her sister during an argument over distribution of ancestral property, succumbed while undergoing treatment on Tuesday. The accused also suffered severe burns when the victim held her tightly when she was engulfed in flames.
The deceased was identified as Varalaxmi, a labourer from Vadiyaram village in Medak district.
Varalaxmi along with her two children was staying in Vadiyaram village after her husband deserted her a few years ago, Chegunta police said.
There has been a dispute between Varalaxmi and her younger sister Rajeswari, who is a divorcee, over the sharing of five acres of land owned by their parents in Kamareddy district.
On Monday night, Rajeswari came to Varalaxmi’s house and an argument broke out between the sisters about the property share.
“Rajeswari brought a bottle of petrol with her and in a fit of rage, she poured petrol on Varalaxmi and set her ablaze,” the police said.
The police added that engulfed in flames, Varalaxmi held Rajeswari and the latter also suffered severe burns before neighbours put out the flames.
Both the injured sisters were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Rajeswari sustained 80 percent burns and her condition remains to be critical.
