Telangana: 920-year-old Nandi idol found in utter neglect in Nalgonda district

HYDERABAD: A 920-year-old Nandi idol along with a rare inscription was discovered in utter neglect at Pamulapadu village of Madugulapalli mandal in Nalgonda district on Saturday.

According to Pleach India Foundation chief executive officer and archaeologist E Sivanagi Reddy, he received information about a headless Nandi idol along with an ancient inscription tablet in the fields of Pamulapadu village.

Upon reaching the spot, Reddy examined the archaeological remains and found that the inscription dates back to 1098 CE.

“The Telugu inscription records a gift of land to the son of certain Upari Mallayya during the rule of Mallikajuna Choda of Kanduru Chola chiefdom,” Reddy told TOI.

The archaeologist has also noticed a Ganesh idol and a hero stone datable to the 16th century CE in the village.

The villagers said there is a vast site with historical remains around the Nandi sculpture with prolific occurrence of pot shreds of redware, blackware and polished redware datable to the 1st century CE.
