TEL AVIV-YAFO, Israel — The Tel Aviv Municipality has announced the annual “Opera in the Park” will return to the city on August 3 in what will be the 20th anniversary of the event.
The special production of Giacomo Puccini’s classic “Madame Butterfly” is scheduled to take place at Ganei Yehoshua Park, open free to the public.
Produced in collaboration with the Israeli Opera, the show will be conducted by Dan Ettinger, musical director of the Israeli Opera, and directed by Gadi Schecter, who directed some of the past Opera in the Park productions.
‘Madame Butterfly’ is considered one of the best-known operas of all time. It tells the story of a young Japanese girl, Cio Cio San, who falls in love with an American naval officer, Pinkerton, who eventually leaves her destitute, alone, and pregnant with his child. “Upon his return to Japan after three years, Cio Cio San discovers that Pinkerton has married an American woman, and the couple wants to adopt her child. She ultimately takes her own life, leaving her son with Pinkerton and his wife,” said Israel21c.
“The Madama Butterfly opera in the park continues the tradition of open opera productions in Ganei Yehoshua Park. 18 years since the debut of the La Traviata in Rabin Square in an open production to the public, and since then every year thousands of spectators come to watch these large opera productions that are open to the public free of charge, a great cultural experience for the whole family,” said Secrettelaviv.
The event will be hosted by Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai.
“I created the tradition inspired by the belief that every person in the country deserves the opportunity to enjoy art, and opera in particular,” said Huldai.
“This year, theatergoers will undergo an emotional and artistic journey as they enjoy the timeless beauty of one of the most renowned operatic masterpieces ever composed. I implore everyone to come and enjoy the show with us this year!”
