Teenager praised for calling out family's 'selfish' actions on their birthday

A teenager has been praised for standing up to their parents, after they ambushed them on their birthday and ruined the celebrations.

The 19-year-old took to online social forum, Reddit, to discuss how their parents travelled across the country without informing them to spend time with them on their birthday.

The child was left to cancel their original plans to spend time with their parents, and they ended up getting into a car accident when heading out for dinner.

The teenager called out their parents for their actions, only to be called ungrateful and it ended up in a teary confrontation for all.

Writing on Reddit, the teen said: "Today is my 19th birthday. I’m currently across the country from where my parents live, and they decided without asking me to visit me for my birthday.

"This annoyed me, because I knew they’d just nag me to cancel existing plans I had with friends and get upset if I didn’t.

"They did exactly that, and then insisted on taking me to their hotel room and cooking me a big dinner. I don’t want a big dinner with my family on my birthday night, I’d rather be having fun with my friends.

"Further, they got in a car wreck while driving me to the hotel (everybody’s okay) so I’m spending my 19th birthday stuck standing on the side of the road.

"I didn’t want them to come, I didn’t want them to nag me into spending my night with them, I didn’t want to spend my birthday standing at the side of a car wreck and then eating dinner with them.

"The irony of this situation is, there is actually something I wanted as a gift for my birthday which was $300. This isn’t a lot to my family, but they said they couldn’t afford it because they spent lots of money on plane tickets.

"They said they didn’t have money for something I wanted, but had enough to buy three plane tickets ti visit when I don’t want them to. If they just didn’t have money to get me something, fine, I don’t mind.

"But if they’re actively going out of their way to spend money on something that I don’t want and will ruin my night and then saying they no longer have money, that’s just infuriating to me.

"It’s not about the money or the present itself, it’s the fact they spent so much money just to make my birthday worse."

The woman continued: "I told them, when my mum asked why I was being so cranky, that I had plans with my friends I had to cancel and that I frankly didn’t want them there.

"She got upset and said my family just wanted to see me and just wanted to feed me. I pointed out they only talked about what they wanted and asked if they even thought about what I wanted.

"This caused my mum to start crying, and my dad got angry and called me an an a****** and ungrateful."

People flocked to the teenager's defence, and called out her parents for their round-about actions in celebrating their daughter's birthday.

One Reddit user wrote: "They wanted to do what they wanted to do, and they didn't care that you weren't interested. You should be allowed to celebrate your birthday how you want."

Another said: "I would have a serious talk with them. You set boundaries, you told them not to come, and what did they do? They came anyways. And then they pressured you to go with them, when you told them you had plans?"

A third noted: "They can’t even be bother to making contact with you and for the plan and just assume you have nothing to do but be with them."

More comments read: "I have confidence you would have been sufficiently grateful if they had assumed, as an adult, you'd have your own plan to celebrate your birthday."

A fifth added: "You need to set some boundaries with them immediately."

And another quipped: "If I were you I'd find a way to reschedule my birthday. Don't tell your family obviously."
