A teenager who squirted acid in the face of a teenage boy he was attempting to rob in Newham has been jailed for eight years after what has been described as a “shocking and needless” attack.

The court heard that 17-year-old Linden Crick entered Plashet Park about 5pm on February 2 last year.

Crick, who was on an e-scooter, approached a group of seven males and initially engaged in conversation with them before demanding their phones.

He intimated that he had acid, showing the group a drinks bottle.

Some of the men he approached ran away and Crick ordered the others to leave the park.

Seconds later, Crick then approached a 17-year-old man who was exercising in the park, demanding his phone before squiring an acidic substance in his victim’s face.

Crick left the park on the e-scooter, passing the original group who were now on the phone to the police.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to burn injuries caused by the acidic substance.

He suffered life-changing injuries.

Meanwhile, police recovered a bottle from the park which contained sulphuric acid.

Detective Sergeant Keith Faris, who was part of the local policing team in Newham and carried out the investigation, said: “This was a shocking and needless attack which has left a young man with life changing injuries.

“The suspect entered the park that day with the express intent of intimidating and threatening others; when the victim refused the demand to hand over his phone he subjected to a horrendous and cowardly assault.

“While the victim continues to recover, he will have to live with his injuries for the rest of his life. I can only hope that this conviction brings some sense of justice to him.”

Crick was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on January 20. The judge removed an order which previously prevented him from being named because of his age.

He was found guilty of section 18 GBH with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed article and six counts of attempted robbery following the at the same court on October 7, 2021.
