Teenager dies in River Thames as police issue warning

  • A 14-year-old boy died after entering the River Thames near Millwall Outer Dock on London’s Isle of Dogs on Monday evening.
  • Emergency services were alerted around 6.50pm, and the boy's body was recovered at approximately 10.30pm, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The Metropolitan Police are treating the boy’s death as unexpected but not suspicious, with inquiries continuing to prepare a report for the coroner.
  • Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter urged the public to remember the serious dangers of open water, advising people to only swim in designated areas and to discuss water safety with children and young people.
  • This incident adds to over 100 accidental drownings in London in the past six years, and at least 15 open water deaths across the UK this summer, prompting warnings about cold water shock from health and safety agencies.
