Teenage girl drunk on hand sanitizer broke prison holding cell window, police say

An 18-year-old, drunk on hand sanitizer, punched a police officer and shattered a jail holding cell window during her arrest last week.

Jade Cain, 18, was taken into custody after cops raced to an address in Canton, Ohio, following reports of a domestic disturbance at the home.

Police body cameras captured much of the incident, with the cops encountering Cain and her boyfriend, Alan King, shortly after arriving.

“What’s your issue?” an officer can be heard shouting at Cain in footage obtained by 19 News in Cleveland.

Cain can be heard responding, “Jade.”

When asked the question again, Cain repeated her name once more.

“She’s drunk, I don’t know where she got it from,” a voice says in the background.

Police would later discover that Cain had drunk from a bottle of hand sanitizer.

At the scene, the cops decided to haul the 18-year-old over to their vehicle. As they dragged her over to the police car, Cain flopped onto the ground in protest.

When she was finally inside the vehicle, Cain began to complain that her shoe had fallen off. Moments later, she strikes an officer in the face.

“Alright, she can go to jail for assaulting a police officer,” a cop says, before slamming the door shut and driving her to the Stark County Jail.

However, at the jail, Cain slipped out of her handcuffs and punched through one of her holding cell’s windows, authorities said. That led police to add vandalism to her charge sheet.

Now, according to 19 News, Cain stands charged with both vandalism and assaulting a police officer. Her bond has been set at $50,000.

Police had previously dealt with Cain and her boyfriend, with one officer expressing frustration at encountering her again.

“I thought we established this last time,” the officer can be heard saying.

The body cam footage ends with Cain being walked through Stark County Jail by officers.

“Come on, I want my boot,” she says.

America’s Poison Centers warns that drinking hand sanitizer, as Cain did, can be deadly.

Hand sanitizer products can contain up to 95 percent alcohol, with most brands containing at least 60 percent ethyl alcohol.

Wine or beer, for contrast, contains around 10-15 percent ethyl alcohol.

Ingesting the cleaning product can cause confusion, vomiting and drowsiness. Severe cases can lead to respiratory arrest, which can be fatal or leave patients in comas.

Experts at the National Capital Poison Center also warn that anyone who has ingested hand sanitizer should immediately seek medical attention.

The Independent has contacted the Canton Police Department for comment.
