A teenager is critical and had to be freed from a vehicle after a head-on crash on the M1 at Lake Macquarie.
Emergency services were called to the freeway at Wakefield, about two kilometres north of Palmers Road just after 3am on Sunday.
Police arrived to find a Mitsubishi Mirage and a Holden Commodore had collided head on.
The 19-year-old female driver of the Mirage was trapped in the vehicle before being freed.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
The driver of the Commodore - a woman, aged 41 - declined medical treatment.
Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It follows another incident on the Central Coast, where a truck driver was killed when his truck rolled at Watanobbi on Saturday.
