Teen victim of horror Audenshaw crash named for first time locally as scores of tributes left for him

The teenage boy tragically killed in a car crash in Audenshaw on Saturday night has been named in floral tributes at the scene.

Police announced on Sunday that a 16-year-old male had died in the horror smash on Droylsden Road, at the junction with North Drive in Audenshaw, on Saturday evening. He was a passenger in a white Vauxhall Corsa which collided with a lamppost.

Now, scores of tributes have been left to the victim at the scene of the smash, which have named him locally as Ben Burbidge. A GoFundMe page has also been set up for the young man to help pay for the costs of a funeral.

“You will always be BEN10 to us,” one message left on flowers said. “Thinking of your mum and sisters,” it added.

Other tributes said ‘RIP Bro’ and ‘Rest in Peace, Ben’. Photos of a group of friends were attached to a lamppost which said ‘family’.

In a statement following the incident, GMP said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a 16-year-old male sadly lost his life. Two others suffered minor and serious injuries, whilst the 18-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and remains in custody for questioning after treatment for his injuries.

"Greater Manchester Police were called at around 8pm on Saturday 15 October 2022 to a serious collision on Droylsden Road, Tameside as it approached North Road. Emergency services attended the scene and despite the best attempts of officers and paramedics a passenger of the vehicle that collided with a lamp post was sadly pronounced dead a short time later after suffering fatal injuries.

"Specialist officers have been deployed to support his family at this devastating time. GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the car, described as a white Vauxhall Corsa, and the collision in a busy area of Audenshaw during the evening to get in touch to help their investigation.

"Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have footage, including dashcam, mobile phone or CCTV/doorbell footage from the area in the moments before the collision took place. Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident 3004 of 15/10/22.”
