Teen had to scrabble under sofa for loose change to buy food for family

Scrabbling beneath the sofa to try to find loose change for food was the heartbreaking reality for one teenager and her family.

Tyra Goodwin from Ellesmere Port had to turn to a foodbank alongside her mum and five younger siblings when she was just 17. She, her mum, brother and four sisters fell on hard times and became homeless after Tyra's mum suffered a spinal injury and could no longer work.

To add to their stressful situation, her mum's benefits were sanctioned and the whole family ended up living in a cramped hotel room and having to eat sandwiches and chips as they didn't have so much as a microwave. Tyra, now 22, had to leave her job due to her own health issues caused by the stress of the situation.
