A teenage boy has died while riding an electric bike that smashed into a parked ambulance during a police chase.
The incident took place in Salford, Greater Manchester, on Thursday afternoon (June 8), with a huge emergency services presence seen in the area, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Roads have been blocked off for a number of hours as serious collisions investigators remained at the scene. An ambulance with a smashed windscreen was pictured within the cordon.
Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed officers followed the 15-year-old teenager, who was on an electronic bike, as he rode along Fitzwarren Street onto Lower Seedley Road in Salford. Bollards prevented the police vehicle from continuing to follow him.
Moments later a 'collision occurred between the cyclist and the ambulance'. The teenager sadly died. The incident has now been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
A spokesperson for the force said: "At 2pm today, GMP Traffic Officers began following a boy riding an electric bike along Fitzwarren Street onto Lower Seedley Road in Salford.
"Bollards prevented the police vehicle from continuing to follow the rider. A short time later, a road traffic collision occurred between the cyclist and an ambulance.
"A 15-year-old boy sadly died. The incident has been referred to the IOPC who will leading the investigation."
