WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s bill that would place sweeping new regulations on college sports failed to reach the floor this week before the Senate gaveled out for recess, imperiling its chances to become law this year as the midterm elections approach.
The measure, coined the Protect College Sports Act, had gained a sudden burst of momentum with support from the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten, after spending weeks in limbo. It advanced out of the Senate Commerce Committee, which Cruz chairs, in June. Before the chamber was scheduled to adjourn Friday, President Donald Trump urged senators to stay until they get through a pile-up of his legislative priorities, including the college sports bill.
