Ted Bundy's unexpected final words as America's worst serial killer was put to death

Good looking, clever and even working as a volunteer at a suicide prevention charity, Ted Bundy seemed to have it all.

But the handsome law student was hiding a chilling secret - he was one of the worst serial killers America had ever seen.

When he was put to death in Florida State Prison aged 42, Bundy had confessed to the put to death of 30 women.

Experts and police believe the actual death toll for the number of people to die at Bundy’s hands is much higher.

During the 1970s, Bundy’s horrifying crimes left women terrified until his eventual capture in 1978.

He would often bludgeon his victims to death before committing unspeakable acts on their dead bodies.

Bundy spent the night with several of the bodies of his victims and had sex with their corpses.

The only way he would stop his sick ritual was when the body had become too decomposed or had been eaten by animals.

He decapitated some of his victims and took their heads back to his apartment, where he would carry out more vile acts.

Bundy would brush and style their hair and even apply make-up before committing sex acts.

In a final, gruesome, confession Bundy even admitted to eating parts of his victims. He said it was so he could “possess them” and so they would become part of him.

Describing himself as addicted to murder, Bundy also claimed the act of killing made him “God”.

In one of his most chilling claims about his crimes, Bundy said: “You feel their last bit of breath leaving their body. You’re looking into their eyes. A person in that situation is God.”

Devastatingly, Bundy could have been stopped before his final few kills.

Several women had come forward to report they had been approached by someone called ‘Ted’ and his ex-girlfriend even told police she believed Bundy was responsible for the murder spree.

In 1975, Bundy was finally jailed for 15 years for the kindap of Carol DeRanch, one of the very few women who managed to survive his attacks.

But he managed to escape out of the window of the jailhouse he was locked up in just two years later.

Despite being caught eight days later and back behind bars, Bundy managed to climb out of a hole in the ceiling of his cell just a few months later and was once again a free man.

Finally, in 1978, Bundy was once again captured and at last confessed to the murders of 36 people.

He was handed three death sentences and spent the rest of his time in prison on death row, where he has been reported he was regularly raped by the other inmates.

On 24 January, 1989, Ted Bundy’s day of execution had come.

When asked if he had any final words, Bundy replied: “I’d like you to give my love to my family and friends”.

Bundy was executed in the electric chair. He was 42-years-old.
