Tech Brief (Nov. 17): Robot-Maker Unitree Steps Closer to China IPO

Nexperia headquarters rachets up feud with China unit with salvo of accusations

Nexperia’s Dutch headquarters has blamed its China unit for any failure to stabilize wafer shipments to customers, hardening its stance in a corporate dispute that has splintered the global semiconductor company. In a strongly-worded statement on Friday, Nexperia Netherlands said it believes Nexperia China has enough wafer and finished product inventory to sustain operations for several months. Any claims of insufficient stock lead to “serious doubt” about the local management’s inventory practices, it said, stressing that “any failure to make shipments is fully the responsibility of Nexperia’s entities in China.” Nexperia Netherlands also accused its Chinese unit of disobeying its instructions, refusing to pay for wafers, misappropriating the company seal and operating with unauthorized bank accounts.

Robot-maker Unitree steps closer to China IPO

Chinese robotics firm Unitree Robotics has completed its pre-listing tutoring, moving a step closer to a domestic initial public offering (IPO). According to a disclosure on the China Securities Regulatory Commission’s website, the status of Unitree’s IPO tutoring, conducted by Citic Securities Co. Ltd., has been updated to “guidance acceptance.” Based on the routine arrangements, Citic Securities and related accounting firms will assess Unitree’s listing qualifications from October to December. The firms’s IPO application will then undergo a review by the stock exchange and the securities regulator, suggesting a listing could take place in late autumn or afterward.

Record-setting Chinese astronauts return safely via backup craft after debris scare

Three Chinese astronauts have returned safely to Earth after making an emergency switch to a backup spacecraft, following damage to their original return capsule from space debris. The Shenzhou-20 crew — Commander Chen Dong and astronauts Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie — landed at 4:42 p.m. local time on Nov. 14 at the Dongfeng landing site in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said. All three were in good health after exiting the Shenzhou-21 capsule. The mission set a new national record, with the crew spending 204 days in orbit. Their return was delayed from an original Nov. 5 schedule after a small crack was discovered on the window of their Shenzhou-20 capsule. Space authorities believe the damage was caused by a high-velocity strike from a tiny piece of orbital debris.

China mulls new rule to limit vehicle acceleration

A proposed revision to China’s mandatory national standard for motor vehicle safety aims to curb the aggressive 0-to-100 kph acceleration battle among new-energy vehicle makers. According to a draft of the Technical Conditions for Motor Vehicle Operation Safety for public comment recently released by the Ministry of Public Security, the updated standard would require passenger cars to default to a driving mode that ensures acceleration to 100 kph takes no less than five seconds every time the vehicle is powered on.
