Tear gas fired despite ‘ceasefire’: A night at Shambhu border amid barricades

Farmers trying to march to Delhi from Punjab and Haryana are camping at the Shambhu border near Ambala. But it hasn’t been easy amid constant tear gas shells.

Protesters said police action continued at the border despite the announcement on Tuesday evening about a “ceasefire” – a term protesters used to assure the police that they would not try to break the barricades till dawn.

However, a farmer claimed that police were firing tear gas just “at the sight of protesters” which is “inhuman”. Protesters said tear gas shells were fired until 4 am on Wednesday.

So far, more than 100 farmers have been injured, protesters claimed. Several police officials have also been reportedly injured.

The highway has been layered with barricades to stop the farmers from going to Delhi. The authorities have also laced the roads with iron nails and barbed wires.

“If our leaders say that the barricades have to be broken further, we will break them,” said farmers. The farmers’ union leaders are set to meet central government officials on Wednesday evening for negotiation talks.
