A new sushi concept as opened in Manchester brining fresh and authentic takeaway sushi to the city centre. Ikkan opened its doors on Oxford Road last week within the Grade II-listed St James' building.
The concept comes from the same team behind China Buffet, a popular Chinese restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. The family run, independent business is serving up meals from its new 'sushi express seven days a week, with dishes freshly prepared by a team of skilled sushi chefs.

Joining the recently opened Loaf, as well as Bundobust and Robert & Victor, this unique grab and go sushi offering perfectly complements the mix and adds hugely to the burgeoning community of exciting independent businesses that we’re seeing thrive on this side of the city."

The small but stylish spot features a timbre-panelled counter lit by a neon maneki-neko, or beckoning cat, which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. Two more figurines sit atop the counter, while opposite, cabinets filled with California sushi rolls, deep fried Ebi rolls and combo platters await.
At the back of the shop, the kitchen, which visitors can see through to, is framed by a blue flag with the Ikkan logo on and rolling waves resembling the famous Great Wave off Kanagawa image. Meanwhile, more display cabinets keep a range of dishes from the hot plates menu warm.
Menus here encompass a range of freshly made sushi and hot plates, all to go, plus boxes and sushi combinations. Currently the shop's hot plate range spans dishes such as Japanese chicken, katsu curry, grilled beef with teriyaki and a smoked eel. Prices for the hot boxes, which are served in tubs with a bed of rice, start from £11.50, while sushi combinations start from £6.50.
Inspired by the name Ikkan, which translates as one, the shop also has a selection of individual sushi items which diners can pick and choose from, starting from £2 a piece. Individual items of sushi include tuna nigiri, spicy salmon and raw octopus with wasabi.
