Schools across Ayrshire are set to close for a further two days next week as the latest round of national strikes gets underway.
An ongoing pay dispute between teaching unions and the Scottish Government has led to more industrial action as teaching staff plan to strike on Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday, March 1.
The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) unanimously turned down the latest six per cent pay rise this year, followed by a 5.5 per cent uplift in the 2023/24 financial year, from the Scottish Government and Cosla last Wednesday afternoon.
EIS General Secretary Andrea Bradley called the proposal “another inadequate offer to Scotland’s teachers.”
Here’s all you need to know for school closures across East, North and South Ayrshire:
East Ayrshire
All East Ayrshire schools will be closed to pupils. It is expected that Early Childhood Centres will open as normal.
Free ‘grab and go’ lunches will be available for collection from your nearest school between 10am and 1pm on Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday, March 1.
Parents and carers will be notified as quickly as possible if a revised pay offer is made and accepted by union members.
South Ayrshire
All South Ayrshire Council operated primary and secondary schools, along with Invergarven and Southcraig schools, will be closed to pupils on Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday, March 1.
Any families with children that normally receive a means tested free school meal will be able to collect a packed lunch from their nearest primary school between 12noon – 1.30pm on each strike day.
The Council’s five standalone Early Years Centres listed below, will not be affected by the industrial action, and will operate as normal:
- Cherry Tree Early Years Centre
- Girvan Early Years Centre
- Prestwick North Early Years Centre
- Space Place Early Years Centre
- Wallacetown Early Years Centre.
All schools will return to operating as normal on Thursday, March 2.
