A sheriff's deputy teaching a class accidentally shot a student after pulling out a real gun instead of a fake one in a "bad guy drill".
Students at South Vermillion County High School in Clinton, 92 miles west of Indianapolis, were attending a law enforcement class led by Vermillion County Sheriff Deputy Tim DisPennett when he fired his weapon.
The male student, who has not been identified, was shot at 9.30am in the classroom after a "bad guy drill" went horribly wrong and the pupil was rushed to hospital.
Fortunately, the student suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the accident which was the second police training shooting since October.
Superintendent Dave Chapman said in a statement: "The incident was in the Law Enforcement classroom where the instructor was going over drills with the students when he accidentally drew his firearm instead of his training weapon and discharging it toward a student.
"The instructor immediately began first aid. Within minutes, emergency personnel and law enforcement arrived on the scene and began assisting the injured student and eventually transported him to a hospital in Terre Haute...
"It needs to be clear that this was an accidental shooting and that at no time were the students and staff at the high school in any danger or threat."
Staff and students were told to stay inside the school until 11.45am as police helped address the boy's injuries.
Deputy DisPennett, who has been part of the team for over 19 years, has been placed on administrative leave following the incident.
As the school was placed in lockdown police interviewed students and staff, parents were unable to pick up their children.
When they turned up to the school, they were told the students couldn't go home until police finished interviewing them.
It is the second shooting by an officer in the past month after a Customs and Border Protection officer was shot twice during a weapons demonstration in Florida on October 20.
The officer, who has not been named, was working as an instructor at Trails Glades Shooting Range when he was shot in the chest.
The man was rushed to Rydra Trauma hospital at 10.30am in a life-threatening condition. He tragically died just hours later.
The officer was taking part in a "building search training" with another instructor when he was accidentally shot in the chest.
According to police, the officer was shot in the chest twice during the demonstration.
