Taylor Swift is reportedly planning to 'let it all blow over' as her fans spark outrage online over boyfriend Matty Healy's past comments.
The Fearless singer is currently embarking on her ERA's tour across the US, as 1975 frontman and rumoured boyfriend Matty has been spotted in attendance. Taylor, 33, has been met with criticism from her fanbase after moving on from her ex Joe Alwyn to 'controversial' Matty.
The 1975 frontman has openly talked about the time he masturbated to porn of 'brutalised' women after a party and made headlines for kissing fans at his shows. Taylor's unhappy fans have even launched a #SpeakUpNow campaign following Matty's controversial comments, but she has stayed silent on the issue.
PR expert Kieran Elsby told The Mirror that Taylor is unlikely to comment and will instead wait for the backlash to die down. "It's a weird one, he's made some appalling comments in the past and it's clear those comments have no place," Kieran said.
"I feel Taylor is a superstar, she could use her voice to speak out, but I don't think she will. I also don't think her career will suffer, after all she never said anything and has millions of fans."
Taylor's fanbase even wrote an open letter to the chart-topper in a bid to get her to reconsider her current relationship with Matty. The account, @SpeakUpNow_13, published the letter before deleting their account, wrote: ‘your voice holds tremendous power and right now your silence is palpable,’ adding, ‘we urge you to reflect on the impact of your own and your associates’ behaviour.’
Despite the huge stream of backlash, PR Expert Kieran doesn't believe Taylor will comment on the drama unless Matty finds himself at the centre of any fresh controversies.
"If Matty was to make new comments (now he is a relationship with Taylor) then that would affect her. I think in this situation Matty may be advised by Taylors team to apologise himself, but I get the feeling that that he may not, I feel that they may adopt the 'let it blow over' approach."
Matty has since spoken out about his past comments and insisted they don't "actually matter".
"You're either lying that you are hurt, or you're a bit mental for being hurt," he told the New Yorker.
"It's just people going, 'Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am.'
"And I kind of want them to do that, because they're demonstrating something so base level," he added.
