Tasmanian premier reveals cabinet shuffle

The resignation of senior MP Sarah Courtney has led to a minor cabinet reshuffle in Tasmania. (AAP)

Tasmania has a third education minister in less than a year after a cabinet reshuffle triggered by a senior MP's sudden resignation.

Roger Jaensch was on Thursday given the portfolio by Liberal Premier Peter Gutwein, with backbencher Nic Street promoted to cabinet.

It comes after former education minister Sarah Courtney quit politics last week after returning from a holiday in France where she contracted COVID-19.

Ms Courtney had been criticised by political opponents for taking leave during back-to-school preparations but insisted she was retiring to spend more time with family.

She became education minister following the Liberal party's re-election in May 2021.

Mr Gutwein, who is also the island state's treasurer, has added tourism and climate change to his portfolio, positions he has previously held.

Mr Street, who has twice been elected to parliament in the southern seat of Franklin in countbacks triggered by the resignations of Liberal colleagues, is the new minister for sport and recreation.

He takes over from Jane Howlett, who has been stripped of the portfolio despite Tasmania's recent success in luring AFL finals matches and the fifth men's Ashes Test.

Mr Street also now holds the community services and development, heritage, and science and technology portfolios.

Mr Gutwein said there was no need for wholesale changes as Tasmania is in a "strong position".

"The changes to cabinet are necessary following the resignation of my former colleague and friend, Sarah Courtney," he said.

"I again wish Sarah all the best and thank her for her service to Tasmania."
