Taoiseach Micheál Martin has led the tributes to resigned British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, after her short tenure as the UK’s leader.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe warned that the instability of the British economy caused by the recent political unrest is a real danger to our own economy.

Mr Donohoe said: “The stability of the economy of the United Kingdom is very important to the Irish economy on a number of different levels.

“It’s very important to us from a financial markets perspective, it is very tangibly important to us as a key destination for Irish goods and Irish services.

“We, at the moment, don’t see any indication that the latest developments in the United Kingdom are having an impact on the performance of the Irish economy and Irish businesses, but it is something that we are monitoring.

“It’s something that is very important to the Irish economy…. Their staibility is a very important ingredient in the stability of the Irish economy.”

The Taoiseach said: “I had a number of opportunities to engage with Prime Minister Liz Truss during her brief period as Prime Minister and I convey my best wishes to her and her family, following today’s announcement of her resignation.

“Working together to protect the gains of the Good Friday Agreement and to support peace and stability in Northern Ireland continue to be vital responsibilities for the British and Irish Governments, particularly now in the absence of a functioning Northern Ireland Executive and Assembly.

“Substantive EU-UK engagement to reach agreement on outstanding issues around implementation of the Protocol is ever more urgent.

“Britain is Ireland’s closest neighbour and a relationship of partnership between the British and Irish Governments is vital for peace and prosperity on these islands.

“I remain committed to working with the British Government in this spirit.”

Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald warned that it would be ordinary people that would be hurt by the political turmoil.

She said: “Forty-five days of chaos and dysfunction at the heart of the Tory Party has ended with the resignation of Liz Truss.

"Forty-five days that worsened an economic crisis and fuelled political instability in the north, while punishing ordinary workers and families who are struggling to heat their homes and put food on the table.

“Forty-five days which laid bare the damage that Brexit has caused Britain politically on the international stage and which has deepened the conversation on constitutional change.

“This is a rudderless Tory government which has no mandate in Ireland.

“Liz Truss' legacy will be soaring mortgage payments, wrecking the economy, lifting the cap on bankers’ bonuses and working in the interests of the super-rich.

“Only a locally elected Executive and Ministers working together will properly serve the interests of people here.”
