Taoiseach insists 'no side deals' have been done with TDs ahead of Government no-confidence vote

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he is “confident” that the Government will defeat Sinn Fein’s motion of no-confidence and insisted no-side deals have been done with Independent TDs in a bid to get their support.

Mr Martin also said if there was to be a General Election, it could put the Budget in jeopardy.

It comes as it’s understood the Taoiseach has been in contact with a number of Independent TDs to ask them to support the Government in the vote tomorrow.

He insisted there are “no side deals” in a bid to get their support.

The Taoiseach was speaking to reporters in Ballymun on Monday and said: “I am confident because I do believe the majority of TDs believe getting things done constructively, dealing with challenges and problems and primarily dealing with the cost of living and ensuring that we have a budget at the end of September.

“It would be a real doubt over budget at the end of September if there was a General Election in the next number of weeks.

“And I think that will be disruptive..”

He said Sinn Fein was partaking in “cynical play” and “destructive politics.”

Mr Martin was joined by Fianna Fáil TD Paul McAuliffe who attended a meeting last week with 29 other Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators who said the party needed to make their identity known to the electorate.

Mr Martin added: “I'm here with Paul this morning and indeed many TDs have made it very clear to me at last week's meeting around their need to articulate and develop some policies..”

Although some that attended insisted Mr Martin’s leadership wasn’t discussed, the meeting has been viewed as a potential move on changing the leadership of the party in the future.

This is despite Mr Martin stating last Thursday that it was his intention to lead Fianna Fáil into the next General Elections.

When asked if a number of Fianna Fáil TDs came to him and asked him to step aside as leader in the next General Election, Mr Martin said TDs were coming to him “saying quite the opposite.”

“In fact, for the last while it's been very positive, as I've gone around with TDs around the country.”
