Taoiseach admits regrets over certain Covid restrictions and gives update on when mask rules could be relaxed

The Taoiseach has said he regrets some aspects of the Covid-19 restrictions that were brought in across Ireland over the last two years.

Micheal Martin told Fully Charged on Spin South West that there was one particular restriction that he believes would not return if the situation worsened.

When asked by hosts Valerie Wheeler and Ed Roche as to if he would've done anything differently now that restrictions have been lifted, he replied: "I'm giving a bit more time to evaluate it. When you're in the middle of things, there are different thoughts running through your mind.

"At the beginning, we had 5k and 2k limits where people were kind of being penned in, I had to make new walks to take.

"We know now that that (restriction) didn't really add a whole lot of value but you learn as you go along. Of course we will learn lessons now for any future variants."

One restriction that remains in place for now is relating to masks.

The face coverings should still be worn on public transport, in shops and when in a crowded area.

But the Taoiseach hinted that may not be the case by St Patrick's Day, saying: "I think we'll review that before February 28. I personally am comfortable wearing it on public transport and in shops, but I think more and more there will be a personal decision.

"People will make a call as to what they feel comfortable doing. That applies to a lot of things, not only masks, and will depend on people's perspective.

"We know that Covid is particularly difficult in the dark winter. There may be rationale if there is an outbreak in the future for mask-wearing in order to protect people."
