Tanya Plibersek Accuses MAFS’ Tyson Gordon Of ‘Controlling Behaviour’ Over ‘Obedient’ Comment

Social services minister Tanya Plibersek has called out MAFS (Married At First Sight) groom Tyson Gordon in response to a clip of him saying he wanted his bride to be “obedient” like a dog.

The clip was lifted from the MAFS spinoff show After The Dinner Party, where co-host Laura Byrne discussed Gordon’s attitude towards women.

“If you want someone who is obedient, yes, it’s controlling, and you want a dog,” Byrne said on After The Dinner Party. “Maybe that’s what I want,” Gordon replied.

Plibersek later reacted to the After The Dinner Party clip in a video shared on her social media pages. “This is the exactly the sort of controlling behaviour that we’re trying to combat when we’re talking about coercive control,” Plibersek said in her video.

Elaborating in the caption of her social media video, Plibersek wrote that the clip of Gordon is “the exact kind of cultural messaging we’re trying to change”.

“Messaging which encourages control and dehumanises women, which is supercharged by algorithms peddling misogyny for profit,” Plibersek wrote.

Plibersek also wrote in the caption that the government’s social media ban and anti-domestic violence work was working to combat this exact type of content.

“We’re doing our bit as a government — we’ve delayed kids access to social media for this very reason and we’re investing in education programs that promote healthy and equal relationships,” Plibersek wrote.

“Let’s continue to call out this behaviour for what it is — the harmful need to exert control over women dressed up as a normal part of a relationship.”

When men who idolise “submissive” and “obedient” women are normalised on prime-time TV, it means coercive control is given a national platform. That’s not entertaining, it’s incredibly dangerous. This is the exact kind of cultural messaging we’re trying to change. Messaging which encourages control and dehumanises women, which is supercharged by algorithms peddling misogyny for profit. We’re doing our bit as a government – we’ve delayed kids access to social media for this very reason and we’re investing in education programs that promote healthy and equal relationships. Please don’t expose your kids to this stuff. And let’s continue to call out this behaviour for what it is – the harmful need to exert control over women dressed up as a normal part of a relationship.

During his appearance on After The Dinner Party, Gordon backtracked on his comments, telling the hosts: “I don’t want a literal dog, but I want to be man of the house.”

“I want to be a leader… I’m sure every female wants that.”

Gordon was previously criticised by fans and fellow contestants for his other comments on MAFS, including his stance on gay couples and his support of US President Donald Trump.
