Davis has a great game plan. He’s slipping every one of Garcia’s hooks. Good right hand by Garcia. And another. Best punches of the fight. Garcia throwing that right hand with confidence. Davis counters with a combination. Close round but those right hands from Garcia made the difference. 10–9, Garcia.

Garcia peppering with his jab early. Throws a short hook that grazes Tank. Little tap to the body from Garcia. Lot of movement from Tank in the first round. Two jabs and a short hook from Garcia. Undercard is finished. Elijah Garcia continued his winning ways with a decision win over Kevin Salgado. Bektemir Melikuziev avenged a knockout loss to Gabe Rosado with a lopsided decision win. David Morrell took another step towards a major world title shot with a brutal first-round knockout win over Yamaguchi Falcao.

Many times—O.K., most times—boxing fails to deliver. Poor matchmaking, excessive pay per views and more titles than the casual fan can keep up with has pushed the sport further and further to the fringes.
Yet every so often boxing delivers a fight that reminds us why we watch.
Ryan Garcia-Gervonta Davis is one of them.
There will be no titles on the line when Davis and Garcia meet at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. Davis, officially, is a secondary titleholder at 135-pounds. Garcia has never held a major belt. Instead, both fighters will bring skill, punishing power and large, diverse fan bases into the most-anticipated fight of the year.

A few notes on an interesting fight week:
- The biggest story this week has been weight. Davis, the unofficial “A” side of this fight, insisted on a 136-pound catchweight. He also demanded a 10-pound rehydration limit the morning of the fight. Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, calls Tank’s demands a sign of weakness. Davis has shrugged it off as typical tactics A-side fighters regularly employ.
- Officially, the weight has not been an issue. Both fighters comfortably made the 136-pound limit on Friday. On Saturday, Davis weighed in at 144.1 pounds; Garcia tipped the scales at 144.9. The 5’5” Davis likely didn’t change his routine much to ensure he stayed within ten pounds. Garcia, however, likely did, and if there is a concern in Garcia’s camp it’s how careful rehydration will affect Garcia’s energy during the fight.
- It’s unlikely judges will be needed tonight but if they are, Nevada has enlisted three good ones. Tim Cheatham and Dave Moretti are experienced officials. Steve Weisfeld is considered the best in boxing. All three were ringside last month for David Benavidez’s decision win over Caleb Plant. All three got the scoring right. The referee, Tom Taylor, a California referee, is also excellent. For one of the biggest fights of the year, Nevada has brought in the best.
