Tampons and 20-year-old Tesco bag: The crazy items found on Weston-super-Mare beach

Tampons and a 20-year-old Tesco bag were just a few of the disgusting items found on Weston-super-Mare beach.

The popular tourist spot attracts large crowds every year - especially when temperatures rise.

But it's left to dedicated members of the community to keep this beautiful coastline looking clean. Weston SUPER Beach clean group come together to help minimise litter.

Remy Galet set up the group in 2021 whilst he was working on the Grand Pier.

He told Somerset Live: "We once found a 20-year-old Tesco plastic bag, which just shows how long a plastic bag can stay in the sea".

The old plastic bag was just a drop in the ocean - a quick look through the Facebook group shows the extent of the litter being left in the Bristol channel.

Alongside bottles of Thatchers, smashed glass and cardboard food holders, there were a few more worrying sights.

A fishing hook, tangled in an abundance of rope, was found in December.

The hook and line was bigger the human hand, prompting a few shocked responses in the comment.

"We don’t often get reports of discarded fishing gear on our beach which is just as well looking at that horror!! Just imagine an animal, bird or child getting caught in that" said one member of the group.

Not all litter is above ground however, with some having to be dug up in order to be removed.

In one post, a picture portrays members digging up a large container of water that had become buried under the sand.

Mary Spinks posted the image with the caption "A plastic container full of water. Took some getting out with just the small spade but wasn't going to leave it there!"

Tampons, decking rope and old footballs have also been found on recent beach cleans.

One lucky member also found £10, which you feel is a deserving reward for the work they do to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the beach.

Groups have been created on Facebook to organise such events, with the Weston SUPER Beach clean group joined by over 600 people so far.

One member posted "Bags FULL of glass bottles are SO heavy from the beach and the beach lawns many already smashed and so dangerous. Also, some are partially buried.

"Discovered many coffee cups and lids in hedges, a can of deodorant, way too many masks, a used sanitary towel, an unused tampon but above all."
