Tammy Beaumont says England will draw inspiration from their 2017 World Cup triumph as they look to put an opening defeat behind them at this year’s tournament.

Holders England lost their opener to favourites Australia on Saturday and face West Indies, who beat hosts New Zealand in their first game, in Dunedin tonight.

In 2017, England also lost their first match, to India, but went on to win the tournament, which is providing opener Beaumont with inspiration in the round-robin format.

“We know it’s going to be a long tournament,” she said. “It’s not necessarily how you start, it’s how you build momentum and how you finish.

“In the last World Cup we lost the first game against India, then had wins throughout, so that’s just part of the World Cup campaign.

“I think we knew taking on Australia was going to be really tough. We can take a lot from that game and how we went about it with the bat and how we’re trying to chase down totals.

“[We need to] just tighten up and build into the campaign and, hopefully, put in a good performance against West Indies and get that first win on the board.”
