CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has scrapped the rule that non-service medical students should provide bank guarantees for 20 lakh to 40 lakh to attend postgraduate or superspeciality studies in any of the state-run colleges.
During the recently concluded NEET-PG counselling, hundreds of non-service PG and diploma students from Tamil Nadu medical colleges had secured seats in top government institutions such as Madras Medical College and Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital. They were taken aback when the state government forced them to pay a bank guarantee before admission.
State health secretary J Radhakrishnan on Thursday wrote to the directorate of medical education (DME) asking it to stop the practice. Instead, these medicos will submit a simple undertaking that on completion they will serve in the state for a certain number of years.
G R Ravindranath of doctors association for social equality (DASE) said it made no sense to collect additional bank guarantees from students.
