SALEM: The Suramangalam police arrested a 31-year-old man in the city on Sunday night after he beat his wife to death using a cricket bat.
The accused, P Keerthiraj, of Reddipatti, married Dhanasriya, 26, three years ago.
“The couple often had quarrels. Ten days ago, a feud erupted between them following which the victim went to her father’s house. The husband went to his father-in-law’s house on Saturday and brought her back to his house after pacifying her. Again they had a fight on Sunday evening. At a point, Keerthiraj took a cricket bat and beat his wife up. She died on the spot,” a police officer said.
“Keerthiraj tried to stage the murder as suicide by hanging the body. He informed his in-laws that their daughter had committed suicide. When they saw the body, they spotted wounds on head and face. So they lodged a complaint with us,” the officer said.
Police initiated an inquiry and during questioning, Keerthiraj admitted that he had murdered his wife.
Based on his statements, police arrested Keerthiraj. He was lodged at the Salem central prison on Monday morning.
