Talks over £3.9 million sale of famous Glasgow Pavilion Theatre collapse

The famous Glasgow Pavilion Theatre will stay open for the time being after talks 'about a potential sale' of the building collapsed.

The manager of the theatre Iain Gordon announced online last night, January 4, that discussions with Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), who also run King's Theatre and Theatre Royal in the city, were no longer ongoing and tickets are available throughout 2023.

The reputed £3.9 million sale was announced in September 2002 and believed to have been at an advanced stage, with Mr Gordon previously telling punters he could only guarantee shows under his management would continue until 'at least' the end of this month and he wanted to go 'out on a high' with the Christmas pantomime.

However, he was delighted to announce on Facebook that the talks had broken down.

Mr Gordon thanked Scots for turning out in droves for this year's pantomime after rumours of the closure spread and said this year had been 'most memorable and successful' in their history.

The post said: "We would like to confirm that no further discussions are taking place with ATG about a potential sale of the Pavilion Theatre.

"A lot of our customers have repeatedly asked us during the past months 'If I book for future shows will my tickets be valid?' This was never in question and any deal made would have ensured that all tickets and shows booked would have remained valid.

"Tickets are now on sale for shows throughout this year and beyond and as always you have the security that these tickets will be valid for all performances in the future.

"We would like to thank our loyal customers far and wide for their continual support which has helped make this year’s Panto season one of the most memorable and successful that we have had at the theatre."

He added in the comment section that the theatre never was closing and was 'simply in negotiations for sale to ATG' that have now ended.

Theatre goers lined up to show their approval. Suzanne Rust said: "Hope this means the Pavilion is staying open!

"I love going to shows there and have been to several wrestling shows and the panto - going to the panto for a second time on Friday!"

Lesley Strain commented: "This is fabulous news . The theatre is just Glasgow through and through. Iain keep up the amazing work you and your staff are doing."

Tracy Carr added: "Amazing, I would hate to break our yearly tradition, great news."
