Talking point: Is the UK doing enough?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a “massive” package of sanctions that he says are designed to “hobble the Russian economy”, in response to their invasion of Ukraine on Thursday. Reports of Russian incursions into Ukrainian territory came on three fronts, as Putin decided to act on the threat of war that has been hanging over the region ever since their annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Mr Johnson said: “President Putin of Russia has unleashed war in our European Continent. A vast invasion is underway by land by sea and by air.”

He continued: “And this is not some faraway country of which we know little. We - and the world - cannot allow that freedom just to be snuffed out. We cannot and will not just look away.”

The invasion so far has resulted in the deaths of around 40 soldiers, and a number of civilians, as rockets rained down on a number of strategic locations and cities in the country. The raft of sanctions so far suggested by Allied forces has done little to deter Putin from launching an invasion, with some already criticising the UK for not going far enough in their response to the continued Russian threat in the region.

Do you think the UK is doing enough to deter Russia’s attack on Ukraine? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below for the chance to be featured on the ES website tomorrow.
