Taliban shows off abandoned US military hardware as they celebrate three years since return to power

The Taliban marked the third anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan on Wednesday with a grand military display at an airbase that was once a US stronghold.

The skies above Bagram airbase roared with the sound of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, while on the ground, a procession of armoured personnel carriers, Humvees and rocket-laden trucks rolled past Taliban officials. The group's distinctive white flag fluttered prominently throughout the parade.

Much of the equipment shown was left behind by American forces during their 2021 withdrawal. Some was also seized from Afghan government forces as they collapsed. Other items were abandoned by US troops after being rendered inoperable.

In total, approximately £5.5 billion worth of weapons, gear and ammunition were left behind.

The chaotic withdrawal marked the first major crisis of President Joe Biden's administration. Tragically, 13 US personnel were killed in a suicide attack on Kabul's airport as thousands attempted to flee.

At Wednesday's event, Taliban cabinet members celebrated their capture of the capital. They downplayed their international isolation and the country's economic crisis, instead focusing on what they view as their government's achievements.

Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Kabir said: “The Islamic Emirate eliminated internal differences and expanded the scope of unity and cooperation in the country'. He added, 'No one will be allowed to interfere in internal affairs, and Afghan soil will not be used against any country.”

The Taliban emphasised their implementation of Islamic law and appealed to the Afghan diaspora to return.

Chinese and Iranian diplomats joined hundreds of attendees at the base for what was the Taliban's largest celebration since ousting American troops.

The Bagram parade showcased military hardware abandoned by US and NATO-led forces, including helicopters, Humvees and tanks.

Uniformed soldiers marched carrying light and heavy machine guns, while a motorcycle formation carried the Taliban flag.

In Kabul, pickup trucks filled with men of all ages drove through the streets in celebration, with some posing for photos with rifles. A parade in southern Helmand province featured men holding yellow canisters representing the explosives used in roadside bombings during the war.

The Taliban declared Wednesday a national holiday. As in previous years, women were barred from the commemoration, including female journalists from international news organisations.
