Tahiti Surfing Competitions Cancelled Due To Unfavorable Conditions

Australian surfer Mick Fanning rides a wave at Teahupo'o, site of the 2024 Olympics surfing competition

Officials in Tahiti have made the decision to cancel the men’s and women’s surfing competitions today due to large, stormy surf combined with unfavorable winds. The deteriorating wave conditions led to the suspension of heats after the men’s Round 3 and before the start of Round 3 of the women’s event.

Yesterday, onshore winds and rain created wholly uncontestable conditions, prompting the suspension of the women’s competition before it could even begin. The challenging weather conditions made it impossible for the surfers to compete effectively and safely.

A schedule announcement is expected to be made at 5:45 p.m. local time in Tahiti (11:45 p.m. ET), providing further updates on the status of the surfing competitions. Spectators and participants are advised to stay tuned for any developments regarding the event.
