‘Taboot’ procession today in Lucknow on Imam Ali martyrdom

LUCKNOW: A large number of followers of first Shiite Imam, Hazrat Ali, will take out the ‘Hasan Mirza ka Taboot’ procession in memory of his martyrdom on 21st Ramzan on Saturday. The procession will be taken out after two years due to Covid-19.

The procession has a 152-year-old history with its inception in 1870 after the founder Hasan Mirza of Lucknow’s Rustam Nagar area witnessed a similar commemoration in Iraq.

“We expect a large number of people since during Covid we had not even decorated the symbolic taboot (coffin) for public tributes, let alone take it out in procession form to be buried at Karbala Talkatora,” said S Zafar Husain, great grandson of Hasan Mirza and a member of the taboot committee.

A three day mourning is observed in Lucknow which begins with the ‘Gileem ka Taboot’ procession on 19th Ramzan.

It culminates in an early morning majlis by a clericon 21st Ramzan, recitation of the Quran and a nauha (elegy) which is then followed by the procession.

From ‘Najaf’ in Rustam Nagar, the taboot is carried to Karbala Talkatora where it is laid to rest.
