T20 World Cup 2024: Tournament format, groups, India matches and everything else you need to know

The 2024 T20 World Cup is the ninth edition of the showpiece ICC event, which will be hosted jointly by USA and the Caribbean islands, beginning with the match between co-hosts USA and their neighbours Canada in Dallas on June 2.

Here's all you need to know about the tournament:

TEAMS: 20, which is an increase from the 16 that featured in the previous edition.

HOSTS: USA and the Caribbean islans (West Indies)

TOURNAMENT DATES: June 2 to 29 (as per Indian Standard Time)

VENUES: 3 in USA and 6 in the Caribbean

TOTAL NUMBER OF MATCHES: 55

GROUPS

Group A: India, Pakistan, USA, Ireland, Canada

Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman

Group C: West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea

Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

In the initial phase of the tournament, the five teams in each of the four groups will play against each other once in their respective group.

Teams finishing in the top two positions will progress to the second stage of the tournament, which is called 'Super 8s'. The remaining three teams from each group will exit the tournament.

The 'Super 8s' stage will see the teams again being divided into two groups of four teams each. Each team will play the other once in its respective group. Top two teams from each group at the end of 'Super 8s' stage will reach the semi-finals, from where the two winners will qualify for the final.

WARM-UP MATCHES

Seventeen teams will play warm-up games scheduled from May 27 to June 1, and the teams can unitlize all 15 members of their respective squad in these matches.

India's only warm-up game is against Bangladesh on June 1.

IMPORTANT PLAYING CONDITIONS

Tied games will be decided by a 'Super Over'. If the 'Super Over' also results in a tie, it will continue to follow 'Super Overs' until a winner can be decided.

Only the first semi-final has a reserve day, in addition to 60 minutes of extra time to finish the match on June 26 itself. If not, the game moves to June 27.

There will be 250 additional minutes available to finish the second semifinal on the scheduled day (June 27) itself.

For the final on June 29, there is a reserve day in place on June 30.
